2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Crankshaft on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before handling the crankshaft, confirm the connecting rod bore by measuring it with the bolts tight on both sides at 100 Nm (73 ft. lbs.) torque. Afterward, use the same equipment to verify the connecting rod bore while the bearings remain installed and the bolts are still at their proper torque. The minimal and maximal diameters are to be recorded after measuring ten points at 20° above the parting line and ten more at a 90° angle to the line. Check the diameter of the entry point for the bearing in two places and find the average diameter for each side. Calculate the bare minimum clearance by taking the difference between the rod bore with the bearing fitted and the journal's average diameter on both crankshaft sides. The maximum amount of bearing clearance is reached by calculating the difference between the biggest connecting rod bore and the average diameter of the crankshaft journal with a bearing on either side. Should the crankshaft come within specifications, the bearing may be replaced; if not, let the crankshaft down to the next smaller grade and have new large rod bearings placed in.
