2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Exhaust Pipe Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Exhaust Pipe on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To start working on the exhaust pipe, remove the battery negative cables, disconnect everything and lift the vehicle onto a hoist. Put heat valve lubricant on each bolt and nut and let it penetrate for 5 minutes. Separate the exhaust pipe and extension pipe by getting rid of the exhaust pipe-to-extension clamp and afterwards, take off the exhaust pipe to turbocharger elbow and remove the exhaust pipe from the transmission support. Check all components, throw away any rusted clamps and broken or damaged supports, plus worn out connecting parts that you can replace with similar original or matching ones for proper performance and quiet exhaust. First, guide the exhaust pipe into the transmission support and secure it to the turbocharger flange, then screw on the elbow clamp to a torque of 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Add the extension pipe and clamp to the exhaust pipe using a new clamp and tighten the clamp nuts to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). After reconnecting the battery negatives, start the engine to check exhaust for leaks and measure the distance from the exhaust system to the body panels just above 25.4 mm (1.0 in.).
