2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Muffler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Muffler on a 5.9L Diesel Engine on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The first thing to do is disconnect the battery negative cables and lift the vehicle to make the service easier. First, unfasten the clamps between the muffler and tailpipe as well as between the muffler and extension pipe. Then take off the muffler from the hanging isolators, the tailpipe and the extension pipe and finally remove it from the car. Install the hanger rods into the isolators, fit the muffler to the extension pipe and the tailpipe, make sure the exhaust clamps hold it in position and tighten all the clamps to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) torque. Upon completing lowering the car, attach the other end of the battery's negative cable, start the engine, search for any gaps between the exhaust and the body and ensure the clearance between these parts is at least 25.4 mm (1.0 in.), readjusting the alignment if necessary.
