2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Oil Pan on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before working on the oil pan, unclamp the battery negative terminals, put on engine support equipment # 8534 and use a hoist to raise the vehicle. Disconnect all starter cables from the starter motor, then remove the transmission and transfer case if available, proceed to exercise the flywheel or flexplate and after that, remove the starter motor along with its adapter. Remove the engine oil, clean the sealing area and put the drain plug into the oil pan, tightening it to torque settings of 50 N.m (37 ft. lbs.). Before you remove the oil pan and suction tube, take out the bolts, crush the oil pan block seal, lower the pan a bit and loosen the fasteners that secure the tube. Make sure the gasket material is removed from every cleaning area, including T-joint areas and flush the suction tube with the correct solvent. Check every bit of the oil system for rust or signs of wear, meaning the oil pan, suction tube and braces, as well as the oil drain plug and drain hole and repair any damage you see, without welding. At installation, make sure there is Mopar in the T joint between the pan rail/gear housing and the pan rail/rear seal retainer. After that, use a Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant and place the suction tube into the oil pan before lining them up in position. Fix a new tube to the gasket, install the suction tube bolts by hand to start and set the torque on the oil pump front bolts to 24 N.m (18 ft. lbs.) and then all other bolts to 43 N.m (32 ft. lbs.). Loosely start by tightening the screws in the center of the oil pan to 28 N.m (21 ft. lbs.), then move on and install the flywheel housing and attached starter, tightening everything to 77 N.m (57 ft. lbs.). Connect the starter cables, mount and tighten the flywheel or flexplate to 137 N.m (101 ft. lbs.), lower the transmission into positionOn the transfer case, set up if included, support the motor, remove the aid #8534 and connect the battery's negative cables. Afterwards, insert engine oil throughout the crankcase, turn on the engine to watch for possible leaks and switch it off to check and adjust the oil as required.
