2004 Dodge Ram 3500 Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Single Cardan Universal Joint on 2004 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: You should remove the propeller shaft before working on any one cardan universal joint. Using a light tap, gently press the outside of the bearing cap assembly to remove the snap ring and then eliminate the snap rings from each side of the yoke. Place the bearing cap in a large socket inside an arbor press or vise and with the included grease fitting pointing upward. Put a socket on the upper bearing cap that is smaller than the cap's outside, thread it onto the yoke, then lift the upper bearing cap until the lower one falls off. Press and see if the bearing cap can be removed by pushing it. If it won't come out, tap the yoke near the bearing cap to dislodge it. Flip the yoke over, make the end of the cross point upward, press gently to house the cross in the open hole and care little by little remove the opposite bearing cap. Check that everything is straight in place when installing, because it can otherwise mark the walls of the yoke bore. In order to assemble, lubricate the insides of the yoke bore with Extreme Pressure (EP) N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease. Set the cross in the yoke so its lube fitting, if installed, points to the top and place a bearing cap on the trunnion, lining it with the bores on the yoke so the needle bearings stand upright. Put the bearing cap into the yoke bore far enough so you can fit in a snap ring and finish by installing the snap ring. Do the same for the opposite bearing cap and if the joint is difficult to use, hit the yoke with a soft hammer to get the needle bearings seated. After that, grease the lube fitting, if equipped and return the propeller shaft to its original position.
