2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Automatic Transmission Shifter on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: For the repair of the AT shifter, remove any parts in the console that might obstruct it and put the transmission in PARK. Remove the transmission shift cable from the shift lever and the shifter assembly bracket, then remove the park lock cable from the shifter BTSI lever and the shifter assembly bracket. If the vehicle is equipped with a transfer case shift cable, detach the cable first from the transfer case shift lever pin, then take out the clip fastening the cable to the bracket on the shifter. After that, take off all the wiring connectors from the shifter, remove every nut attaching the shifter to the floor pan and lift the shifter assembly away from the vehicle. Before you install anything, hold the floor shifter in PARK, open the adjuster on the shift cable and check that the park lock cable tab is up and unlocked. Put the wiring harness onto the shifter assembly bracket, then join any previously separated wire connectors. Next, fit the transfer case shift cable into the shifter assembly bracket and clip it on and then snap them onto the transfer case shift lever if this features is included. After that, press the lock cable into each of the shifter assembly bracket and BTSI lever and then insert the shift cable into the shifter assembly bracket. Slide the shifter assembly onto the studs fitting it to the floor pan and bolt it in place, tightening the nuts to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). Link the shift cable to the shift lever pin, push the lever back into PARK and secure the adjustment screw by tightening it to 7 Nm (65 in. lbs.). Drop the key into the accessory position, press on the tab for the park lock cable adjustment to secure it and make sure you can shift correctly, lock the parking brake and use BTSI prior to restoring all removed parts to the console.
