2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Automatic Transmission Shifter for the 545RFE on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing or repairing the 545RFE Automatic Transmission shifter mechanism, you should remove any parts of the console that block access to the transmisison shifter and cables. Should it be necessary, unfasten the bolts joining the shield over the gearshift and park lock cables to the shifter assembly and remove it. After putting the transmission into PARK, remove the cable from the transmission shift lever. Pull out the shift cable retainer from the shifter assembly's notch. Place the key in LOCK and then unconnect the park lock cable from both the shifter mechanism cam and the shifter assembly notch. Unhook all the wiring connectors from the shifter and remove all bolts connecting the shifter assembly to the floor pan and only then take out the shifter assembly from the vehicle. Set the assembly in place on your vehicle's floor pan and fasten it with the bolts, each one tightened to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Pull the shift lever back into PARK, loosen the nut that holds the shifter in place and attach the gear shifter cable to the shifter assembly pin. Affix the park lock cable to the shift mechanism cam and the notch on the shifter, while always leaving the key set to LOCK while making the adjustment. Pull the lock cable tab upward so it's in the unlocked position and after that, connect the wiring harness to the shifter assembly. Put the gear shift in PARK, then tighten the adjustment screw to 30 Nm (265 inch lbs.). Secure the key is in the LOCK position and the shifter is in PARK, after that, depress the park lock tab to lock the shifter. Be sure the shifter, the park lock and the BTSI all perform properly. Should you need to, set up the shield cage for the gearshift and park lock cables on the assembly and then secure it with bolts, before reinstalling any removed parts on the console.
