2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Drive Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Drive Belt on a 4.0L Engine on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing the drive belt, you should disconnect the negative battery cable first. Spin the belt tensioner until it bumps into its stop, take off the belt and gently move the tensioner into the free position. Place the new belt correctly as marked on the Belt Routing Label in the engine compartment so that the water pump rotates in the proper direction; otherwise, the engine may become too hot. Inspect the pulleys carefully as soon as you receive them. Do not put the belt around the idler pulley, but route it around each of the others and continue until the tensioner arm stops, then put the belt around the idler and let the tensioner rotate onto it and sit down on all the rest. There is a belt wear indicator; on 4.0L engines specifically, the indicator mark must fall between the lower and higher limits. If not, simply replace the serpentine accessory drive belt.
