2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Belt Tensioner on a 4.0L Engine on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before servicing the belt tensioner on a 4.0L engine, first remove the drive belt and then disconnect the tensioner from the bracket. Because of its heavy spring tension, the automatic tensioner has to stay intact and should not be assembled/disassembled. Sit the tensioner assembly onto the mounting bracket, make sure the two dowels are in position, tighten the bolt by hand only and then secure 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.), while avoiding any twisting of the coil mounting bolts. Now, place the drive belt onto the pulleys and ensure that the indexing marks match.
