2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install an Oil Pan on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: To replace the oil pan, take off the negative battery cable and raise the vehicle up safely. First, drain the engine oil by unscrewing the oil pan drain plug. After that, remove the connector at the exhaust manifold on the pipe and the connector hanging from the catalytic converter to lower the entire pipe. You should remove the starter motor, engine flywheel and transmission torque converter access cover. If your car comes with such a sensor, it needs to be disconnected. Under the engine vibration damper, set a jack stand, placing a wooden 2 x 2 block in between and use bolts inside the engine mount to raise the engine until there is enough space to access the oil pan. Separate the wires attached to the oxygen sensor from the oil pan, loosen and detach the oil pan bolts and studs and lift the oil pan and oil level sensor gasket to the rear so they slide out without being damaged. Once ready for installation, clean the surfaces of the block and pan gasket, fashion alignment dowels from 1 1/2 by 1/4 inch bolts, then install two in the timing case cover and the other two in the cylinder block. Cover the corners of the rear main bearing cap and the block to front cover with Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant, then put the gasket over the positioned dowels onto the block and timing case cover. Place the oil pan so that the dowels rest on the gasket and the oil level sensor is not crushed if it comes with your engine. Two 1/4 bolts go in the oil pan first, tighten them to 9.5 Nm and then two 5/16 bolts go in, tighten those to 15 Nm. Take out the dowels and add the last four oil pan bolts at 9.5 Nm (84 in. lbs.). Gently lay the engine onto the mounts, insert the through bolts and make sure the nuts are tightened. First, get rid of the wood block and jack stand, then place back the engine flywheel and transmission torque converter access cover and lastly reinstall the starter motor. Carefully link the exhaust pipe to the hanger and engine manifold once again, then reconnect any transmission oil cooling tubes and oxygen sensors wiring support. Attach the drain plug and turn it with a torque of 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.), lower the vehicle, get the negative cable back on the battery and refill the engine oil until the correct level is reached. Energize the engine and examine it for gasoline leaks, being very careful not to get near the operating engine or to point the fan at yourself.
