2005 Dodge Caravan Shock Absorber Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Remove and Install a Shock Absorber on 2005 Dodge Caravan?
A: First, support the rear axle by placing 2 jackstands on the outer edges of the axle and only afterward remove the shock absorber. Should the shock absorber lower mounting bolt deflect toward the ceiling when you try to unscrew it, lift the axle by increasing the height of the jack; if it deflects downward, lower the axle. After that, detach the lower mounting bolt, hold the shock absorber and remove the upper mounting bolt to separate the shock from the suspension. For this step, take the shock off your car and in the Ball Joint Press, use the Receiver Special tool 8526-1, his name is yellow, make sure it's snug and tighten the screw. Attach Driver, Special Tool 8526-2, to the Ball Joint Press screw drive at the tip. It helps to clamp the Ball Joint Press in a bench vise when using this procedure. Put the shock absorber upper mounting eye into the Receiver so the notch does not touch the shock absorber body and tighten the Driver until it touches the outer edge of the bushing everywhere evenly, squeezing the bushing out of the eye. Press back on the screw and take out the bushing from the Receiver. When fitting the upper bushing on load-leveling shock absorbers, repeat the Receiver and Driver installation as you did before so that the Driver seats the bushing to the specified depth. In the Receiver, secure the shock absorber upper mounting eye, fix the bushing between the shock absorber eye and Driver and use the screwdriver to bring them together carefully. Push the Driver into the shock absorber eye until it contacts the face of the eye, back off the Ball Joint Press screw driver and remove the shock absorber from the press. First place the shock absorber against the frame rail, insert the upper mounting bolt and then insert the lower mounting bolt onto the axle to secure the shock absorber. Take off the support jack and allow the vehicle to come to rest on all four wheels, warding off full curb weight by the suspension. Once the suspension is holding the car as it should, tighten both sets of shock absorber mounting bolts to a torque of 88 Nm (65 ft. lbs.).
