• Q: How to Service a Heater Core on 2005 Dodge Magnum?

  A: The first step to servicing the heater core is to unplug the negative battery cable and isolate it, letting the air bag system capacitor discharge for two minutes. Eliminate all coolant from the engine's cooling system and take out the heater hoses from the heater core tubes. Disconnect the driver side laptop from the main air distribution unit and take out the blend door actuator as well. Take off the two screws fixing the flange to the front of the HVAC housing near the dash panel and remove the flange. Protect your carpets from engine coolant spills by keeping towels ready to clean up. Release the retaining clamps, separate the tubes from the heater core and throw out the O-ring seals. Gently pull out the heater core tubes from behind the dashboard and cover or insert plugs into the opened heater core outlets. Take out the screw that holds the heater core retaining bracket on the driver side, slide the bracket off and then remove the heater core from the air distribution housing. Set the new heater core behind the driver side duct, fasten the retaining bracket onto the HVAC housing and use a screwdriver to tighten the screw to 2.2 N.m (20 in.lbs.). Take out the jumper wires and the tape from the heater core's three ports, rub engine coolant on the new O-rings and then put them onto the fittings at the heater core tube. Slip the heater core tubes through the dash under the hood, connecting them to the heater core and use retaining clamps to fasten them securely in place. Align the flange with the heater core tubes and place it over the HVAC housing, then secure it with two screws turned tight to 2.2 N.m (20 in.lbs.). After that, reconnect the actuator and the silencer to their positions, attach the heater hoses to the heater core and fasten back the negative battery cable. Replacing the heater core requires draining, cleaning and then refilling the cooling system.
