2005 Dodge Neon Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Water Pump on 2005 Dodge Neon?
A: Raise the car on a hoist, take out the inner splash shields to access the water pump from beneath. Following, unplug the accessories' belts and purge the coolant system of the vehicle. Take out the bolts attaching the power steering pump, set the pump and assembly aside, while not disconnecting the power steering lines. Unscrew the upper and lower isolator struts for the engine, hang the engine from underneath and then undo the bolt and right bracket securing the engine mount. After that, remove the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, camshaft sprocket and rear timing belt cover. Remove the screws from the engine that secure the water pump and take out the pump. Try to notice any cracks or loose parts on the pump, coolant leaking from where the shaft seal connects, rough bearings when you spin the pump, extra rubbing between the impeller and the pump body or engine block and loose or rough flanges either on the impeller or sprocket. Before installing, apply Mopar Dielectric Grease to the O-ring and set a new O-ring gasket in the O-ring groove in the water pump body so it remains properly seated to avoid leaks. Join the pump body to the block and then tighten the screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Properly pressurize the cooling system by adding 15 psi with a pressure tester to examine for leaks on the water pump shaft seal and O-ring and then manually turn the pump to check its mobility. After reinstalling the timing belt rear cover and camshaft sprocket, put in the timing belt tensioner, timing belt, engine right mount bracket and both upper and lower torque isolator struts. Then, fill the coolant and put back in place the accessories drive belts.
