2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rocker Arm Assembly on 2005 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before servicing or repairing the rocker arm assembly, cut off the negative battery cables and take the cylinder head cover off. After that, take out the rocker arm/pedestal screws to remove the rocker arm and pedestal from the cylinder head and remember to mark them before taking them off. Be careful, as these sockets might be checked by the engine bay when being removed. Pull all the push rods out of the engine and mark them where they belong. You should also remember that the #5 and #6 cylinder intake and exhaust push rods need to go up through those access holes in the cowl panel. Take off the crossheads and mark them too. Soak the parts in a good solvent, remove stuck junk using a brush or rotary device before rinsing and drying them with compressed air. Use compressed air to send out contaminants from the oil passages in the rocker arms and pedestals. While checking the rocker shaft, remove the shaft, inspect the bore and shaft for cracks or severe wear, look at both the socket and insert and fix or replace the retainer if damage is found. Take measurements of the rocker's bore and shaft and look over the push rod ball and socket for any cracks or scoring and change out bent push rods. Be sure to inspect the crossheads as they may have cracks or signs of too much wear on the specific sides. To install, line the push rods up where they were previously and ensure that they rest in the tappets. Apply lubricant to the valve tips, then place the crossheads in position and again lubricate, adjust them back, then reinstall the rocker arms, tightening the bolts to 36 Nm (27 ft. lbs.) torque. Check valve lash next, then attach the cylinder head cover and gasket to the early builds or just the cylinder head cover to late builds, then connect the negative battery cables back.
