Q: How to Service and Repair Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves on 2005 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Start servicing and repairing the valves, guides and springs by removing the cylinder head and either setting it on stands or turning the head bolts around to guard the injector tips. Then, fit the mounting base, put on the top plate, washer and nut and tighten the nut clockwise to collapse the valve springs and remove any locks. Twist the nut holding the compression springs to the left while removing the spring compressor. Remove the retainers, springs, valve seals and the valves and sort or number all of them to help with putting everything back during assembly. Use crocus cloth or a Scotch-Brite pad to wipe the valve stems, clean the carbon with a soft wire brush and wipe or wash the valves, springs, retainers and valve retaining locks in a suitable solvent. Afterward, rinse them with hot water and blow them clean with compressed air. Check the valves for unusual signs of wear and replace any that show damage. Taking into account three measurement points, the diameter of the valve guide bore should be between 7.027 mm and 7.077 mm and both intake and exhaust valves must each have an installed valve guide depth of 0.35 mm. Check the valve margin (patent clearance), valve spring free length and maximum inclination and measure the spring force with tool C-647, confirming it ranges from 72.0 to 80.7 lbs. when the valve moves 35.33 mm. Replacement seals for the intake side are yellow and seals for the exhaust side are green. After putting the seals in place, put the valves where they were before and identify the exhaust valves by their dimpled head. After fitting the valves, springs and retainers, compress the springs with tool 831 9-A and use that tool to fit the valve retaining locks. After that, take out the compressor and follow the steps for the rest of the cylinders. Replace the O-ring and seal washer on the injector, grease the O-ring and the inside of the injector, ensure the sealing washer was taken off with the old injector and then fit the injector and cylinder head into place.
