2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2005 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Once the timing cover repair is needed, unhook the negative battery cables and put the vehicle up on a hoist. Remove a little engine coolant into a suitable vessel, then bring the car down to finish the process. Unscrew the upper radiator hose, take off the viscous fan/drive/shroud assembly, remove the accessory drive belt and disconnect the cooling fan support/hub. Raise the vehicle a second time so you can take out the power steering pump, accessory drive belt tensioner, crankshaft damper and speed indicator ring. Set the vehicle down, then loosen and remove the bolts connecting the gear cover to the housing to take it off without ruining the gaskets on both parts. Set up for installation by replacing the front crankshaft oil seal using a crankshaft front seal service kit seal pilot installation tool. For the gear housing cover, apply a bead of Mopar(R) Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant in all of the through holes. Place the cover using the seal pilot, insert it into the housing and safely tighten the bolts to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) torque. Disassemble the pile and remove the seal pilot before putting in the front seal dust shield. Raise the car once more to fit the speed indicator ring and damper and then lower it. Install the fan support/hub assembly and tighten its bolts to 32 Nm (24 ft. lbs.), next add the power steering pump and tensioner belt for the accessory drive, tighten the bolt to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.). Secure the accessory drive belt after which the cooling fan/drive/shroud assembly and finally press on the radiator upper hose with included clamps. Add coolant, hook the battery back up and turn on the engine to search for any leaks.
