2005 Dodge Ram 3500 Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Shift Cable on 2005 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before servicing or repairing the shift cable, place the transmission in PARK and raise the vehicle. Unclip the cable from the shifter, pull the cable adjuster out of the bracket and lower the car using the computer's lowering function. If needed, take out the insulation pad from the dash panel and then remove the grommet from inside the panel. Access the gearshift cable and BTSI mechanism by removing any needed parts from the steering column and then disconnect the BTSI wiring connector. Unplug the cable end from the lower column bracket and shift lever, feed the cable along the dash panel into the vehicle and pull it out from the gearshift cable. For installation, direct the transmission end of the gearshift cable inside the car through the opening in the dash panel and seat the grommet into this slot. Slide the cable into the steering column bracket until the retaining part is locking and secure the other end to the shift lever ball stud. Once more, lift the vehicle, put the manual transmission shift into "PARK," and spin the prop shaft until the transmission comes to a stop. Send the gearshift cable through the bracket for the transmission and snap its retaining ears into the bracket, then join the cable's eyelet with the manual shift lever ball stud. Lower the vehicle, hold down the cable lock tab until it feels firm, confirm the transmission range sensor is in good working condition, utilize the gearshift cable to adjust it as you need to and adjust the BTSI mechanism when required.
