2005 Dodge Stratus Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft on 2005 Dodge Stratus?
A: The first step is to remove the cylinder head cover, next take off the camshaft position sensor and lastly remove the camshaft target magnet. Then, take out the timing belt, remove the camshaft sprockets and remove the timing belt rear cover. This symbol on the bearing caps indicates which ones come off first, so do not take off the inside caps yet. Remove the retaining bolts from the camshaft bearing cap, making sure each camshaft goes back the same way it was removed. Notice that cam 6 has a wider thrust bearing face compared to the others. Name the camshafts before you remove them and then free them from the head. Should you be removing rocker arms, mark them carefully so they are put back where they came from. Cleans the camshaft by rubbing it with a proper solvent. Review the camshaft bearing journals for any faults and tight spots as well as look at the cylinder head for damage. Make sure the oil holes in the head are clear. Seek abnormal wear and damage on the cam lobe and bearings and if the camshaft is found to be at fault, make a replacement. Check the lobe's amount of wear, with 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) as the standard and 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) as the most the lobe should wear before being replaced. Make sure the pistons are not at the top dead center when you are installing them. Spray each camshaft bearing journal, rocker arm and the round faces on the cam with oil and then position the rocker arms back where they came from if you're reusing them. Install the camshafts on the head bearing journals and fasten the right and left bearing caps Nos. 2-5 and right No.6 to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.). Shake some Mopar(R) Gasket Maker onto bearing caps No. 1 and No. 6, fit, tighten the fasteners to 28 Nm (250 inch lbs.) and install them. Install the end caps before settling the seals between them. After installing the camshaft oil seals, put in the camshaft target magnet and the camshaft position sensor. After that, you should secure the cover over the cylinder head, cover for the timing belt rear and the camshaft sprockets before reinstalling the timing belt.
