2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Muffler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Muffler on a 3.7L/4.7L Engine on 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Services for the muffler of a 3.7L/4.7L engine should start with lifting the car and supporting it on the side rails, so the axle can hang down. Fill the bolts and nuts with heat valve lubricant and give it about 5 minutes to work in. Set a jackstand below the rear axle, taking out the RH rear shock absorber and RH section of the stabilizer bar at the same time. After that, unbolt the nuts connecting the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter to the muffler/tailpipe and remove the grounding strap. Remove the assembly that contains the tailpipe/muffler from the isolators, then take that assembly out of the car. To install, put the muffler and tailpipe assembly on your car and fix the insulators. Secure all the bolts and nuts at the front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter flange to verify that the muffler/tailpipe assembly has about a 25 mm (1 inch) space between it and other parts. Tighten those nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) and go ahead to put the RH shock absorber and stabilizer bar back in place. Drop the vehicle to the ground and start the engine to judge if exhaust is leaking and make any needed repairs.
