2006 Chrysler Town & Country Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Camshaft on 2006 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: Before servicing or fixing the camshaft, you need to remove the engine and then remove the cylinder heads. Then, take out the timing chain and camshaft sprocket, along with the hydraulic lifters and be sure to recognize where all the tappets go to reinstall them correctly. Afterwards, remove the camshaft thrust plate and thread a long bolt through the front of the camshaft to make it easier to remove later. Removal of the camshaft should be carefully done to avoid harming the cam bearings with the cam lobes, since the camshaft bearings are serviced when the engine block is removed. Look at the lobes on the camshaft and the bearing surfaces to make sure they aren't damaged or worn out and change the camshaft when necessary. Whenever you change out the camshaft for any reason, make sure to also change the lifters. If the amount of wear on the lobe is more than 0.0254 mm (0.001 in.) or the maximum allowed 0.254 mm (0.010 in.), replace the camshaft. Apply engine oil to both the lobes of the camshaft and its bearing journals, then help install the camshaft with a long bolt. Put the camshaft thrust plate and bolts in place, tighten them to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) torque and check the end play of the camshaft. If it doesn't meet the requirements, change the camshaft thrust plate. Put the timing chain and sprockets in place and remember to put new hydraulic lifters in when you change the camshaft, then put each used lifter back in the exact same spot you removed it from. The timing chain cover, cylinder heads, cylinder head covers, lower and upper intake manifolds and the complete engine assembly should be installed last.
