Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Parking Brake Cable on 2006 Chrysler Town & Country?
A: First, jack and support the vehicle, next take out the rear wheel and tire and then remove the brake drum. Secure the automatic adjuster and move to the front parking brake cable; where it meets the equalizer, grab a visible part, pull down on it, then clamp locking pliers on the cable four inches back from the second body outrigger bracket. Unhook the right rear parking brake cable from the connector on the intermediate cable and to free the housing from the body bracket, first compress the retaining fingers using a 14 mm box end wrench. Takethe brake shoes off the support plate and detach the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. With a 14 mm wrench, squeeze the retaining fingers on the brake support plate and remove the parking brake cable. Raise the vehicle up for the left rear, disconnect the wheel and tire and take out the brake drum. Disable the automatic adjuster, take the rear parking brake cable loose from the equalizer and detach the parking brake cable housing from the bracket with a box end wrench. Taken out the brake shoes and unlatch the parking brake cable from the actuator lever. Once that is done, take out the housing retainer from the brake support plate. For fold-in-floor seating, pull up the hand brake, raise the vehicle and press down the automatic self-adjusting tension to release it. Take the equalizer and cable out of the routing bracket mounted on the car's underbody. For servicing the right rear cable, take off the screws connecting the routing clamps to the rear axle, the screw that connects the cable to the rear brake adapter and the eyelet on the shoe lever and then slide the cable out of the brake adapter. Insert the flats of the wrench into the cable retainer at the intermediate bracket and rotate counterclockwise a quarter turn, then free the cable from the bracket. To fit the brake, connect the rear parking brake cable into the brake support plate, making sure the retainer fingers hold the housing, install the cable to the parking brake lever and secure the brake shoes. Feed the cable housing retainer down into the body outrigger bracket, join the right rear parking brake cable to the connector on the intermediate housing with pliers, push in the brake drum and wheel assembly and free up the front parking brake cable from locking pliers. Raise the vehicle just a bit and press the parking brake pedal for one cycle to fit the cables. Sets of connections and checks should be the same for the left rear as for the left front. To set up fold-in-floor seating, lift the leading part of the parking brake cable and route it through the bracket hole. Bend the cable back until it connects to the brake and secure it in the routing clip. For right rear cable, hook the cable eyelet onto the shoe lever, connect the routing clamp with screws on the rear axle and fit the fastening screw as well. Attach equalizer clamps to all of the parking brake cables, release the locking pliers, lower the vehicle and push and release the parking brake pedal.
