2006 Dodge Charger Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Service and Repair a Driver Air Bag on 2006 Dodge Charger?
A: You should first disconnect the vehicle's negative battery cable and wait two minutes for the air bag circuit to empty, to avoid unplanned air bag deployment. Carefully remove the two caps and their screws from the driver air bag, being sure not to pull on the horn switch wire while doing so. Pull the driver air bag back just a little bit, so you can remove the two squib connectors and the horn connector and then separate the air bag from the steering column. If only the switch or the trim cover is bad, the air bag cushion assembly can go in a new, undamaged trim cover, but when the air bag is bad, both the air bag and trim cover need to be replaced as an assembly. For mounting, set the driver air bag into the steering wheel close to its designated spot, connect both air bag squibs as well as the horn connector, finally secure the air bag with the screws. While you're behind the steering wheel, put in the two screws for the driver air bag, twisting them to a tightness of 10 N-m (89 in. lbs.). Never connect the negative battery cable until after the system test or you could hurt yourself or others.
