2006 Dodge Durango Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Axle Shaft on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: Before dealing with the axle shaft, lift the car on a hoist while it's in the neutral position. Take out the caliper, rotor and brake caliper adapter, then get rid of the wheel speed sensors. After that, take off the differential housing cover and draw out the lubricant. Turn the differential case over to reach the lock screw on pinion mate shaft (4), remove screw (4) and then take out pinion mate shaft (1). Press inward on the axle shaft to lift out the C-lock and then remove the axle shaft. Before fitting the bearing, grease up the inside and seal edges of the bearing housing. Insert the axle shaft (1) into the seal (2), sliding it so it engages the side gear teeth that are between the two halves. Slide the C-lock onto the aft end of your axle shaft, then nudge it outward until it fits in the side gear. Slip the pinion shaft into the rear of the differential using its thrust washers and pinions and line up the shaft hole with the case hole, then apply Loctite on the lock screw (4) and tighten it to 25 Nm (220 inch lbs.). You only need to install the differential cover, fill it with gear oil, set in the brake rotor and caliper adapter with caliper and then place the wheel speed sensors.
