2006 Dodge Durango Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service the Belt Tensioner on 3.7L, 4.7L, and 5.7L Engines on 2006 Dodge Durango?
A: For 3.7L and 4.7L engines, when replacing the drive belt tensioner, ensure the indexing tang at the tensioner back is about 24 mm (0.94 in.) from the indexing stop before installing a new belt that has not been used for more than 15 minutes. If fulfilling this specification is not possible, look for the wrong belt on the vehicle, worn and ineffective bearings on engine accessories like the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, loose pulleys on the engine accessories, improper alignment of the engine accessories or an incorrect routing of the belt. It is recommended to replace the belt if the tensioner indexing arrow points to the minimum indicated tension, because further tightening on the belt is not possible. First, take the accessory drive belt off and next take out the tensioner assembly from the mounting bracket. Because of the high pressure in springs, never try to disassemble the automatic tensioner except for the pulley which is replaced individually. Remove the bolt from the pulley on the tensioner and then pull off the pulley for the 4.7L engine. On 3.7L and 4.7L engines, fit the pulley and the bolt to the tensioner, then tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs). Put the back of the tensioner over the smooth head of the bolt through the front cover, fasten the mounting bolt and tighten it to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). After that, set up the accessory drive belt and check the marks on its teeth. When working with the 5.7L engine, secure the tensioner to the mounting bracket at 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) force, next install the tensioner and bracket and finish by sliding on the accessory drive belt.
