2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500 Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft on 2006 Dodge Sprinter 3500?
A: The first step to take out the camshaft is to cut the negative wire on the battery and remove the cover on the engine, keeping fuel messages in mind. Then, disconnect the high-pressure lines and injectors and afterwards, take out the cylinder head cover. Spin the engine at the crank only, so that piston #1 of cylinder one is at ignition TDC and secure the inlet camshaft into place. Get rid of the timing chain tensioner, pull on the front cover of the cylinder head after taking out the bolts from it and take the front cover off. Lift out the top side rail and link the camshaft gear to the timing chain to block crankshaft movement. Find out where the camshaft sprocket is in relation to the timing chain, unattach it from the exhaust camshaft and remember its dowel pin position. First, soften all the camshaft bearing caps' bolts, while making sure not to turn the camshafts as you do so. Identify every camshaft cap by adding a mark or scratch to it, after which you can remove them along with their respective camshafts and check them for damage. See that all the camshafts are fully released from pressure and their correct gas goes into the areas made for them. Line up the markings on the camshafts with those on the instant-communicating camshafts. Put the piston in cylinder #1 at the ignition TDC, attach the #2 and #5 bearing caps and use one turn to tighten each bolt to 9 Nm. Setup and install the remaining bearing caps the same way, making sure the piston is in the right position as you tighten the inlet camshaft. Put the locking pin through the first camshaft bearing cap into the sprocket hole and into the sprocket, place it on the exhaust camshaft, then tighten the bolt to 18 Nm. Set the timing chain tensioner, adjust the basic camshaft position, put in the slide rail and connect the driver to the inlet camshaft, with 50 Nm of clamping force. Replace the front and cylinder head covers, install the clean injectors, reattach the negative battery cable and run the engine while keeping an eye on leaks and warning messages for the fuel system. Finally, put on the engine cover.
