2006 Dodge Stratus Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter in a 40TE Transaxle on 2006 Dodge Stratus?
A: First, refer to the recommended intervals for changing fluid and the filter which are found in your maintenance schedules. Use Mopar ATF+4 during the oil change and do not forget to change the filter. You should also clean the magnet in the oil pan with a clean towel while it's dry. If the transaxle is apart, replace both the fluid and the filter. Place the vehicle on a hoist, ensure that a drain container is set up under the oil pan and continue from there. Relax the bolts on the pan and hit one edge so the fluid drains from the pan before you take it off. After installing a new filter and O-ring at the valve body's bottom and cleaning the oil pan and magnet, replace the oil pan and tighten the bolts to 19 Nm (165 inch lbs., using replacement Mopar Silicone Adhesive sealant as you go). Pour 4 quarts of Mopar ATF+4 into the ATF dipstick opening, start the car and let it idle for at least one minute. With your parking and service brakes on, move the selector from low to high and then back to neutral or park. Use the dipstick to check the fluid level; if it's below 3 mm (1/8 inch) from the lowest marker, add fluid to reach that level. Then check again when the transaxle has reached its normal operating temperature. Be sure to push the dipstick all the way in to stop dirt from getting to the inside of the transaxle. In the case of the dipstick tube fluid suction, wait until the transaxle is operating at full temperature, use an appropriate suction device, put the line into the dipstick tube and check that it hits the lowest point inside the oil pan to get all the fluid. After removing the suction cannula, add four quarts of Mopar ATF+4 through the dipstick hole, run the engine and check the fluid level by following the earlier procedure and seating the dipstick completely.
