2006 Dodge Stratus CV Boot Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a CV Boot on the Inner Constant Velocity Joint on 2006 Dodge Stratus?
A: Start by taking out the big boot clamp, then throw it out, then take out the little clamp that secures the boot to the interconnecting shaft. Remove the sealing boot by poring it off the tripod housing and down the shaft, all while making sure the bearings stay fixed on the spider trunnions. After that, unhook the snap ring that holds the spider assembly to the interconnecting shaft and lift off the spider assembly using a brass drift. Look at and inspect the spider assembly, tripod joint housing and the connecting shaft and if any part is worn, you must change the whole driveshaft assembly since none of its components are meant to be fixed. First, slide the retaining clamp onto the interconnecting shaft and then fit the raised bead of the replacement inner tripod joint sealing boot into its groove on the shaft. Set the spider assembly into place, making sure it is secure, ready for the snap ring installation. Place half of the supplied seal grease into the tripod housing and place the rest in the sealing boot. You should slide the tripod housing over the spider and interconnecting shaft, then make sure the inner tripod joint seal boot seals well on the shaft. Attach the sealing boot slowly and correctly using crimper Special Tool C-4975-A to keep it free from wrinkles or stretching. Place the sealing boot into the indicated triangle of the housing and clamp it fully closed. Release the inner tripod legs, using your trim stick, always making sure it remains level with the housing to not damage the sealing boot. Put the interconnecting shaft in the center of the tripod joint housing, disengage the tripod trim stick and put the trilobal boot up against the tripod housing splines. Secure the tripod joint sealing boot with the tool or method suited to your type of clamp, whether crimp type with tool C-4975-A or low profile latching type with Snap-On YA3050 or a similar clamp, making certain the latch is locked in place.
