2006 Jeep Commander Axle Shaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service an Axle Shaft Seal on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before servicing the axle shaft seals, lift the vehicle on a hoist and put it in neutral. Take the calipers and rotors off first and next remove the speed sensors (2) from the axle tube (1) flange. Then, after removing the nuts from the axle, pull out the axle shaft and backing plate from the tube, until the axle bearing shows. Get rid of the O-ring (2) from the axle bearing and after that take out the axle shaft (1) from the axle tube and the backing plate. First, put the new O-ring on the axle, followed by placing the axle shaft (1) into the axle tube and then install it on the backing plate. Put O-ring (2) through the backing plate and push the axle through until the bearing (1) shows, then attach a new O-ring (2) to the axle bearing (1). Bury the axle through the center tube and tighten the axle flange nuts (1) to 119 Nm (88 ft. lbs.). Place the two speed sensors into the axle tube flange and then set in the calipers and rotors.
