2006 Jeep Commander Shift Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Shift Cable on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: Before serving and repairing the gearshift cable, set the transmission to PARK and lift the vehicle. Remove the cable eyelet from the gearshift cable by sliding it upwards at the transmission manual shift lever and pulling the cable out of its mounting bracket. Secure the vehicle and lift up, then, if possible, open up the floor assembly to reach the change setup and cables. If you have to, remove the bolts attaching the shield for the gearshift and park lock cables to the assembly and take the shield off. Take the gearshift cable off the shift lever pin and the gearshift cable retainer out of the notch in the shifter assembly. Pull the shift cable grommet off the dash panel and remove the gearshift cable out of your vehicle. To connect the gearshift cable, push it through the dash panel from the shifter, put the grommet over the hole in the dash and attach it tightly to the panel. Place the gearshift cable retainer in the notch of the shifter assembly and clip the gearshift cable to the shift lever pin. In certain cases, the cable adjustment nut should be loosened. If the propeller shaft rotates, set the transmission manual lever all the way back and rotate the propeller shaft again until you feel that the PARK system is on. Put the gearshift cable through the bracket and fit the end of the cable onto the manual shift lever at the transmission. Pull on the vehicle hazard switch and then check that the shifter is in the PARK slot. Turn the nut to a torque of 30 Nm (265 inch lbs.) and check that the shifter works smoothly. Should the assemblies require it, attach a shield around the cables of the gearshift and park lock and fix it by screwing on the bolts. Once everything is complete, add the floor console and dash panel insulation pad if required.
