2006 Jeep Commander Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain the Thermostat on a 3.7L/4.7L Engine on 2006 Jeep Commander?
A: To do proper thermostat service on a 3.7L/4.7L engine, first take off the negative battery cable and empty the cooling system. Lift the vehicle with a hoist and take out the splash shield and the clamp securing the lower radiator hose at the thermostat housing. Then, loosen and take out the bolts holding the thermostat housing, the thermostat housing and finally the thermostat. Before installing the new thermostat, clean the mating areas of the timing chain cover and the thermostat housing and then set the spring side of the thermostat into the machined groove on the timing chain cover. Set the thermostat cover over the timing chain cover, then bolt it on using two bolts tightened to 13 Nm (115 inch lbs.). Check that the housing is even to prevent cracking or leakage and that the thermostat is straight within the housing. Install the lower radiator hose into the thermostat housing and also reattach the splash shield, then set the car back down, fill its cooling system, attach the negative battery cable and finally turn on the engine to warm it as you look for possible leaks.
