2007 Dodge Caravan Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Piston on 2007 Dodge Caravan?
A: Service the connecting rod by starting with the removal of the cylinder head, oil pan and Balance Shaft Carrier Assembly. Before you remove the pistons, ream the top ridges off the cylinders to make sure the tops of the pistons aren't exposed. A stamping in the pistons points out which direction is the front of the engine. To get the connecting rods and pistons out, turn the crankshaft so that each connecting rod is in the middle of its cylinder bore. Stamp or mark each connecting rod cap with the cylinder number to avoid harming the connecting rod from the use of a punch or stamp. Make sure not to damage the fracture rod and cap as you remove the connecting rod bolts and caps and also remember you should not reuse these bolts. Attach Special Tool 8189 which acts as connecting rod guides, onto the connecting rod and handle each assembly as you carefully remove each piston and rod. After removal, remove Special Tool 8189 and then put the bearing cap back on the mating rod. After one piston and connecting rod assembly is finished, start over again with the remaining assemblies and then remove the piston ring from every piston.
