2007 Dodge Caravan Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2007 Dodge Caravan?
A: Before servicing the steering knuckle, lift the car and wheel it up onto supports, then get rid of the wheel and tire set. Following this, remove the cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from the end of the stub axle and hub nut. Have your helper use the vehicle's brakes to stop the hub as you turn and remove the hub nut. Take out the entire disc brake caliper and adapter assembly from the knuckle before using a bungee cord or similar wire to ensure it doesn't hang by its brake hose. Grasp the tie rod stud with one hand and loosen the holding nut with another hand. Remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle by using a Remover, Special Tool C-3894-A. With antilock brakes, take off the wheel speed sensor from the steering knuckle of the front wheel. Unscrew the two bolts that link the steering knuckle to the strut clevis bracket. Pull out the driveshaft stub axle from the hub and bearing by tipping the knuckle outward. Support the driveshaft suspended outward with a bungee cord or wire so it doesn't hang from the inner joint. With a power impact wrench, remove the ball joint nut because the stud inside the knuckle stays put. Harootunian had me reinstall the ball joint nut at the top level to prevent it from deforming in the following process. It is important not to hammer the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle to keep from damaging anything. To get the ball joint stud off, place Remover, Special Tool C-4150A, on the inner side of the knuckle and have the ball joint stud release from the inside. After getting rid of the nut on top of the stud, detach the steering knuckle from your car. If you must relocate the hub and bearing, unscrew the four knuckle bolts, disconnect them and pull out the hub and bearing.
