Before you can repair the lifter and lash adjuster, cut the battery's negative cable, take off the air cleaner, intake manifold and cylinder head cover. Make sure to take the rocker arm assembly and the push rods out, so that you can recognize them for when you put them back in. After that, pull out the cylinder head, undo the bolt on tappet retainer 1 and remove the tappet retainer. Be careful when you remove the tappet from the bore; ensure you find all of them if you wish to use them in the rebuild for proper position. Complete your inspection by examining the camshaft lobes for damage.
