2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely Remove the Left Camshaft Without Damaging Engine Components on 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: It is vital to check that the timing chain isn't rotated separately, as this could cause damage to the valves or pistons. When removing the cam sprocket, the timing chains or camshaft, use Special Tool 8379, because not using it could move the tensioner ratchet too far and require removing the timing chain cover to reset the ratchet. Cover removal must be done first, then rotate the engine to TDC for cylinder No. 1 and place both of the camshaft sprocket V6 marks at the 12 o'clock spot. During installation, mark both secondary timing chain links in the same manner next to the V6 mark on the sprocket. Do not touch or hold down the camshaft target wheel, since it could do damage and make the engine fail to start. Turn the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt counterclockwise a little, but keep it touching the sprocket. Take care to adjust or lock the timing chain tensioners before you take out the camshaft sprockets or you will need to open the timing chain cover later for setting up. Place Special Tool 8379 between the timing chain and tap it to support the chain until it snaps in place against the tensioner arm and guide. Before taking out the camshaft sprocket bolt and sprocket, secure the camshaft using Special Tool 8428. Turn the camshaft 5° clockwise using the same tool until it stands in the neutral position. Unscrew each bearing cap retaining bolt one-half turn at a time, starting on the outside bolts and moving toward the center, so you don't damage the caps by sturring or striking them. Be aware that, with the camshaft out, the rocker arms could slide down, so mark them before taking out the camshaft bearing caps and camshaft.
