2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Adjust Timing on a Single Camshaft on 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before adjusting the timing, attach Chain Tensioner Wedge, Special Tool 8379, to hold the secondary chain drive steady and mark the position of the chain on the sprocket as a guide. Then, unwind the ID camshaft drive gear bolt and carefully remove the camshaft drive gear. Using the camshaft drive chain, turn the sprocket on the front until the V6 marks line up on each end of the chain. With Special Tool 8428 Camshaft Wrench fitted, turn the camshaft until the dowel found on the camshaft lines up with the slot on the camshaft drive gear. Make sure the camshaft sprocket retaining bolt is cleaned of excess oil before you reinstall it, to avoid both over-tightening it and having it fail. Place the camshaft drive gear on top of the camshaft, take off the oil from the bolt and fit the retaining bolt in place. Then, add the Special Tools Spanner Wrench 6958 and Adapter Pins 8346 and turn the retaining bolt clockwise to make sure it is tightened to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.), using a suitable torque wrench. After that, take out Special Tool 8379, turn the crankshaft two full times and make sure that the marks on the V6 camshaft drive gear are in line. The last part is to place the cylinder head covers on the car.
