  • Q: What is the Proper Way to Install a Piston Ring Set on 2007 Jeep Patriot?
    A: While installing the piston rings, make sure that the mark on the entire surface of the upper and intermediate rings is positioned facing upward on the piston. Initially, you should install the oil ring expander, next the upper oil ring side rail and finally the lower oil ring side rail. For the side rails, slide one end between the piston ring groove and the oil ring expander, hold it securely and push down to fix it in place, not using the piston ring expander. Y1 should be stamped on the upper compression ring and Y2 on the lower one and both should face upward. After that, put in No. 2 piston ring, then add No. 1 piston ring. Properly set the piston ring gaps and make sure the oil ring expander gap is at least 45° from the side rail gaps but remains far from the piston pin and thrust area, because having the gaps in correct places helps oil control.
