2007 Jeep Patriot Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2007 Jeep Patriot?
A: The repair and servicing of the rack and pinion should begin with siphoning as much as you can of the power steering fluid from the pump. Roll the vehicle forwards so the front wheels are straight ahead and ease the floor carpet back to get to the column base and the intermediate shaft coupling bolt. Unbolt this nut without separating shaft (2) from pinion shaft (4). Turn the front wheels and steering wheel straight forward and hold the steering wheel in place using a holder to keep the Clock Spring where it should be. Support the vehicle, lift and hold it and after that, loosen and remove the nuts from the mounting flange and take out the wheel and tire outer assembly (1). Remove the nut on both ends of the rack and pinion and use Remover (1) and Special Tool 9360 to separate the outer tie rod end at the knuckle from the rack and pinion end. If you have an engine belly pan, take it off, after which you should take out the rear and front engine through-bolts. Take the crossmember off the rear differential housing and then release the heat shield (3) and remove it. At the rack and pinion, remove the return hose and pressure hose and take out the clamp securing screws and the retainer screws from the crossmember. Take out both of the stabilizer bushing retainers. Before you remove it, place marks on the body of the vehicle near each crossmember mounting bolt using a marker or crayon, so you can put it back correctly. Position a transmission jack beneath the front crossmember and take out the four holding bolts (two each side) that connect the front crossmember to the body. Rotate the shaft to access the coupling on the intermediate shaft, then lift or lower the crossmember enough to slide the coupling right off the rack and pinion pinion shaft. Remove the necessary dash seals (3, 5), then get rid of the two bolts (1) attaching the rack and pinion (2) to the crossmember. Pull up on the stabilizer bar so the rack and pinion can be removed from the vehicle and then get the rack and pinion off the crossmember.
