2008 Chrysler Aspen Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Change the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2008 Chrysler Aspen?
A: Start by raising and holding up the vehicle on safety stands; after that, place a large, shallow drain pan below the transmission pan. Unbolt the pan from the front and sides, leave the bolts at the rear loose and carefully pull apart the front of the pan so the fluid runs into the pan. When you're done, turn the pan level, get rid of the remaining bolts and lower the pan gently from the transmission while transferring the last fluid to the drain pan. Then, take out the screw securing the primary oil filter (1) to the valve body, break the filter off the valve body and oil pump and transfer the fluid from the filter into the drain pan. If the oil pump filter seal looks okay and fits right, it can be reused; if it's loose or broken, discard it instead. Once you get a new cooler return filter, used the wrench to get the old one off and correctly dispose of the old filters and transmission fluid. Look at the bottom of the pan and the magnet for metal; a little clutch material is normal unless the car has symptoms of slipping or being slow to shift. Wipe the pan and magnet with a matching solvent and scrape away all remaining old gasket material from the transmission case and pan. During installation, make certain the primary oil filter seal is correctly placed against the oil pump body, not on the filter neck. Where necessary, install a fresh primary oil filter seal in the oil pump inlet bore using either Installer 6960-A or a proper tool. Slide the replacement filter onto the oil pump, holding it into place with the valve body, followed by fastening the screw on top (1), leaving it tightened to 4.5 Nm (40 in. lbs.). If required, put a new cooler return filter (2) onto the transmission and secure it with 9.5 Nm (84 in.lbs.). Using the Mopar Rtv sealant, put beads along the transmission case's mounting surface, place the pan in place and tighten the bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Afterward, set the car down onto the ground and pour in Mopar(R) Atf +4 into the transmission.
