  • Q: How to Safely Extract the Crankshaft from an Engine on 2008 Dodge Nitro?
    A: First, the engine must come out of the vehicle, in order to remove the crankshaft from the engine. Starting with the engine, first everything must come out, including the oil pump. To get the oil pan off, do not pry on the oil pan gasket as it is fastened three places to the cylinder block and separate from the oil pan. With that, remove two bedplate mounting bolts as you note the location two stud bolts which will be reinstalled. Disconnect the connecting rods from the crankshaft being careful not to damage the key sealing surface between the bedplate and cylinder block. Take care when handling the bedplate it contains the lower main bearing halves and be sure the main bearing halves go in the right way so as not to ruin the crankshaft. Gently and carefully loosen, remove the bedplate using the designated pry points on the bedplate. Finally, take out the crankshaft and the crankshaft tone wheel.
