2008 Dodge Nitro Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Replace Exhaust Valve and Intake Valves on 2008 Dodge Nitro?
A: You need to remove the cylinder heads before taking out and putting in the valve. Get rid of the rocker arms and lash adjusters before you remove the bearing caps on the camshaft and the camshaft itself. Make sure to use Valve Spring Compressor C-3422-B or C-3422-C along with Adapter 8519 and tap the valve spring's top if you have to in order to open the spring retainer locks. Must make sure to handle the valve spring with care when you detach the two halves of the lock, as it is tight after releasing the compressor. Following this, uninstall the valve spring compressor and then remove the spring retainer and spring. Make sure the keeper grooves are smooth and that there are no burrs on the valve stem, before you pull out the valve. Since the valve stem seals are identical, take out the seal and mark the valve so it goes back in correctly. One should remember to check and test the valve springs before putting them back into service after removing the valves. Look for wear or destruction in the valve springs, then use tool C-647 to measure the spring load by placing the spring over the stud and listening for a ping when you pull on the torque wrench. Double the torque found on the wrench to get the spring load at test length and make smaller adjustments if required. Refer to the specifications and change the springs that exhibit a height or tension that is too high, too low or outside of the acceptable range.
