2007 Dodge Nitro Exhaust Valve Parts and Q&A
Q: What Are the Key Differences in Servicing Exhaust Valves and Intake Valves on 2007 Dodge Nitro?
A: When servicing or repairing the valve, you need to take off the cylinder heads ahead of the rocker arms and the lash adjusters and after that the camshaft bearing caps and the camshaft. You remove all valve springs and valves in the same way, but we'll only look at one valve and its spring here. Special Tool 8519 Adapter and either Special Tool C-3422-B or C-3422-C Valve Spring Compressor are needed to compress the valve spring and you can tap the top of the valve spring to release the retainer locks on rare occasions. Remove the spring retainer lock halves gently, as the valve spring compressor is under tension when the spring is released. After you remove the compressor, pull out the spring and its retainer, check for sharp edges in their holes, smooth down any burrs you find on the valve stem and then take out the valve from the cylinder head. Since the same valve stem seals are used for intake and exhaust, remove each seal and mark the valve so it is installed properly. Valve springs should be tested and checked for reuse after the valves are removed. Look at the valve springs for signs of damage and use tool C-647 to aim the tone device's surface at the 40.12 mm (1.579 in.) mark on the threaded stud and the zero mark on the front. Hold the spring over the stud, then press the compressing lever, pulling the wrench until you hear a ping. Note down this reading. Double the reading to figure out the spring load at test length and then check the specifications for the allowed height and strength to see if the springs must be replaced.
