2008 Dodge Ram 2500 Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to check and install a Piston Ring Set Before Reassembly on 2008 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Always check how much space the piston ring needs by first making the cylinder bore clean, inserting the ring into the bore and measuring the gap with the top of the ring at least 12 mm (0.50 inch) from the bottom of the bore. Put a piston in the cylinder bore, square the ring and slide it downward, measuring the ring end gap with a feeler gauge and then replace the rings that do not meet the requirements. It is important to make sure the ring grooves are smooth and untouched by nicks or burrs, check that the feeler gauge fits nicely between the ring land and the ring and replace any ring that is considered out of specification. Rotate the piston while holding the ring around it and confirm it moves in the groove without pausing. Because the two rings have different cross sections, the No. 2 piston ring should be installed with the manufacturer's identifying dot facing toward the top of the piston. For the piston rings: oil ring expander, followed by lower oil ring side rail, upper oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate ring and No. 1 upper ring. Install the oil ring expander first, then put the upper rail on with the first end inside the piston ring and the expander. Press on the rail's second end until it fits, put on the lower rail the same way and press. Put the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring in place with your piston ring installer. The ring gaps are to be positioned as directed and note that staggering them from top piston views is very important in managing oil. Place the oil expander in position 1, put the oil ring rails into positions 2 and 4, put the second compression ring into position 3 and mount the top compression ring into position 1.
