Always measure the ring gap by making sure the ring is at least 12mm (0.50 inch) above the bottom of the cylinder bore and then clean and insert it to observe the gap. Set the ring square by lowering it into the cylinder with a piston, measure the ring end gap with a feeler gauge and swap out rings that are out of standard. Before checking the ring size, ensure the grooves in the piston rings are clean and free of sharp edges, test fit the feeler gauge between the ring and ring land and replace any ring that doesn't fit. Try making the ring go around the piston inside the groove to ensure it moves smoothly. Because each ring has a different shape, the No. 2 ring should be placed so that its manufacturer I.D. (Dot) points up at the top of the piston. Put the piston rings in the cylinder in this order: oil ring expander, lower oil ring side rail, upper oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Fit the oil ring expander on the cylinder first, then put the upper side rail between this and the piston ring groove, hold it, press it down until it fits and do the same with the lower side rail. You should use a piston ring installer to put the No. 2 intermediate piston ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring into place. The gaps between each piston ring should not be closer to the side rails than 45° and should not be placed on the piston pin or in the thrust direction.
