2009 Dodge Ram 3500 Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install Piston and Connecting Rod Assemblies into the Bore on 2009 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Remember to put the piston rings in the bore before adding the piston and rod assemblies. After putting the piston and rings in clean engine oil, set a ring compressor above them and tighten it slowly, avoiding any movement of the rings. Set the bearing onto the connecting rod and moisten the area with fresh motor oil. Screw Connecting Rod Guides 8507 into the bolt holes on the connecting rods. There is a raised "F" or arrow on the piston pin bore surface which marks the position for the pistons, pointing toward the front of the engine on each side. Take out the cylinders and polish them with engine oil. Move the crankshaft until the connecting rod fits in the center of the cylinder bore and slowly slide the rod and piston into the bore while setting the connecting rod guides above the crankshaft journal. Hit the piston down in the cylinder bore with a hammer handle and direct the connecting rod into its proper place next to the rod journal. Throw away the connecting rod bolts after each use; do not try to reinstall them if they have loosened up or been removed. Before installing new rod bolts, brush off the cap, apply some clean engine oil to the new bearing and insert it. Use clean engine oil to cover the bearing surfaces and fasten the bolts so that they show about 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.) plus a quarter turn. Set the cylinder head(s), cylinder head covers, intake manifold and oil pan along with the gasket/windage tray. Add the recommended engine oil to the tank and tie the negative cable to the battery at last.
