2009 Jeep Commander Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Safely Extract the Crankshaft from an Engine on 2009 Jeep Commander?
A: It is necessary to remove the engine from the car earlier than taking out the crankshaft. Remove the engine first and when that is done, move on to the engine oil pump. As the oil pan gasket is mounted in three locations on the cylinder block, don't try to remove it as you take off the oil pan. After that, take out the bedplate mounting bolts, but remember the position of the two stud bolts for when you reinstall them. Disconnect the connecting rods from the crankshaft so that the bedplate and cylinder block joined surface is not harmed. Be cautious when lifting the bedplate, since it holds the critical lower main bearing halves and you don't want to drop or damage them which could result in severe damage to the crankshaft. Place a screwdriver in the pry points you see in the bedplate to carefully lift it off. Once you've finished testing, remove the crankshaft without harming the bearings.
