Jeep Commander Crankshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How is a Crankshaft Installed in an Engine on Jeep Commander?
    A:
Once the main bearings are checked as being select fit, avoid scratching or damaging the bearing surfaces on the crankshaft when you are installing it. Add sealant to the tone wheel retaining screws before you install them. Fill the upper main bearing with clean engine oil and lay the crankshaft in the cylinder block on the ground, next put the thrust washers in place. Wipe this sealant onto the mating surface between the bedplate and cylinder block to seal it well and stop big oil leaks. Put a 2.5 mm (0.100 inch) layer of Mopar® Engine RTV sealant around where the cylinder block meets the bedplate. Lubricate the main bearing journal areas of the crankshaft with clean engine oil and then set the bedplate in place, applying clean engine oil to each bedplate retaining bolt. Insert all bedplate retaining bolts, keeping the stud bolts in place and first tighten bolts 1D, 1G and 1F until the bedplate makes contact with the block, secondly tighten bolts 1 - 8 to 40 ft. lbs. and finally tighten another 90° on bolts 1 - 8. After that, secure bolts A - E to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Check the crankshaft end play, mount the connecting rods after that and measure side clearance too and finally put in the oil pump and install the engine.
  • Q: How is the Crankshaft Removed from the Engine on Jeep Commander?
    A:
The crankshaft cannot be taken out of the engine until the engine is first removed from the vehicle. Open the path by taking out the engine oil pump. Before taking off the Oil Pan, don't try to pry the gasket, since it stays attached to the block and will remain in place during the removal. After that, remove the bedplate mounting bolts, making sure you know where the stud bolts should go back. Dissassemble the connecting rods from the crankshaft so that the important sealing surface isn't affected between the bedplate and cylinder block. The bedplate holds the lower section of the main crankshaft bearings which is why you should handle it gently because a mishandled bedplate could damage those bearings and harm the crankshaft. Release the bedplate by prying at the points cast on its underlying surface. After that, take out the crankshaft very carefully, taking care not to harm the bearing surfaces.
