- Q: How to Remove and Replace the Piston's Connecting Rod in an Engine on 2009 Jeep Patriot?A: Before bringing out the connecting rod, set the piston rings onto the piston. In order to avoid the alignment of ring groove gaps with the oil ring rail gap, set the top compression ring's gap at a higher position than the bottom one. Make sure the ends of the oil ring expander are touching firmly and the rails are evenly apart, observing from above the piston before using the ring compressor. Put the piston head and the rings in engine oil and then cover the piston with the ring compressor, making certain the rings are not disturbed. It is important that the piston is installed so its arrow faces the front of the engine. Set the connecting rod journal to be fully inserted in the middle part of the cylinder bore, then apply clean engine oil. Pick the needed size of rod bearing from the nose of the crankshaft and then bolt the connecting rod bearing half above the connecting rod. Place the piston into the bore and use the hammer handle to make sure the connecting rod is on its journal. Use fresh bolts instead of reusing the old ones; coat their threads with clean engine oil before you secure the lower part of the bearing into the cap and bolt the cap on the rod. Finger tighten every bolt and then tighten each one alternately so the assembly is correct. Follow the 2 step method to tighten the connecting rod bolts to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and then turn them another 90+ degrees. Take the feeler gauge and check that all spaces between the parts are properly spaced. Then, place the ladder frame, balance shaft module, oil pan, cylinder head and as the last part, set the engine in place.
