2010 Dodge Challenger Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair the Axle Shaft for 198 RII and 215 RII Axles on 2010 Dodge Challenger?
A: For service and repair, park the vehicle in neutral, raise it on a hoist or use under-hoist jack stands to compress the rear of the vehicle. The assembly of the halfshaft is not meant to be serviced; both boots must be replaced if either one is damaged. You must be sure to mark the halfshafts differently since the right halfshaft is shorter than the left. Don't hold the halfshaft by the boots, as this may lead to a problem with the drive train. First, pull out the axle drain plug, empty the rear axle fluid and then reattach and tighten it to 50 Nm. After that, remove the rear exhaust system and the wheel/tire assembly, where they are both connected to the side of the shaft to take out. Loose the wheel hub nut and then mark alignment lines on both the rubber coupler on the shaft and the axle flange. Release the bolts or nuts from the propeller shaft coupler at the axle flange and partway remove the halfshafts from the assembly. Place the transmission jack behind the rear axle if you use a drive-on hoist; otherwise, squeeze the back springs and then place the jack below. Free the bolt/nut from where the rear axle attaches to the vehicle's front end, as well as the rear axle bolts joining it to the crossmember and simultaneously lower the axle with rope or wire under it to support the propeller shaft. With the axle down, take out the halfshafts one by one by pressing in one as you take off the other one, remembering to guard the axle seal and journal. Be very careful with halfshaft assembly so that you don't damage the slinger and if it is bent, straighten it to ensure there is no contact with the axle seal assembly. After that, remove the halfshaft from the hub and inspect the rubber isolation washer. Throw it away if it shows signs of wear. If you have both sides, do the process on the other side too. Loosen and unscrew the axle seals using the proper screwdriver.
