2009 Dodge Challenger Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove the Axle Shaft from the 198 RII and 215 RII Axles on 2009 Dodge Challenger?
A: Before removing the half shaft, put the vehicle in neutral, lift it up with a drive-on hoist or support the rear suspension with screw-style under-hoist jack stands. Unscrew the drain plug (1) with a 14mm hex and remove it, then reinstall and tighten the plug to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.). The following step is to take off the exhaust system in the rear and also remove the wheel/tire assembly from the side opposite the shaft. Take off the wheel hub nut (1) and put alignment index marks (3) on the propeller shaft rubber coupler (1) and axle flange (2). Take out the three bolted flange nuts that hold the shaft coupler to the axle, then use a screwdriver to remove the halfshafts half way from the axle assembly. With a drive-on hoist, set up the transmission jack (1) to the rear axle assembly; on all other hoists, compress the rear suspension and afterwards, put the transmission jack in place. Undo the mount isolator (1) bolt/nut (2) and the rear axle-to-crossmember bolts (1) with a short socket and a ratchet. Slowly let the rear axle down and use suitable rope or wire to hold up the propeller shaft as you do (1). Set the axle as low as necessary so the halfshaft can be removed in sections, while always trying to protect the seal and journal (1). Do not pick up the halfshaft assembly with its boots and watch that the slinger is not bent during assembly so it does not touch the seal on the axle housing. Take the halfshaft off the hub, put the rubber isolation washer (1) aside and discard it if it seems worn, then remove axle seal (2) with the right screwdriver.
