Q: How to measure Rod Bearing Clearance on 2010 Jeep Wrangler?
A: At the time you remove the bearings, place marks on each cap so they will return correctly during assembly, as bearings do not match. Put the bearing shells on the rods and caps so the tangs fit into the grooves and point in the same direction on both parts. Don't organize the rods on different sections until you have all of them. Standard and undersize connect rod bearings are available in sizes 0.025 mm (0.001 in.) and 0.250 mm (0.010 in.). Always replace sets of bearings at the same time, do not put a new bearing half together with one still on the rod and do not use a file on the rods or bearing caps. Examine the rod to ensure the journal has no taper or is not round. Set the engine so the connecting rod is at the bottom of its stroke, remove the oil from the surface, lay Plastigage across the whole width of the bearing confronting the cap, place the cap on, tighten the bolts while avoiding crankshaft turning, remove the cap and use the marked scale to see the clearance. Record everything you measure with Plastigage, since it has both metric and inch markings. If the clearance in the bearing surpasses the wear limit description, change the bearing.
